A bedtime story for Zoe

Zoe and Mr. Snuggles' Twilight Quest

2 min read · Ages 3–5 · 335 words

Zoe had just stepped out of her warm bath, all wrapped up in her softest towel. The bathroom was steamy and cozy, like a cloud. Mr. Snuggles sat on the fluffy mat, waiting. His button eyes sparkled in the gentle light. Zoe gave him the biggest hug. "Ready for our adventure?" she whispered.

Together, they tiptoed down the hallway. The house was quiet and calm. Soft golden light glowed from every corner. Zoe's feet went pitter-patter on the warm floor. "Where shall we go, Mr. Snuggles?" she asked. The teddy bear's paw pointed toward the window.

They padded into Zoe's room. Outside, the sky was turning purple and pink. Stars were beginning to twinkle like tiny lights. "Look," Zoe said softly. "The stars are waking up." She sat on her bed and pulled Mr. Snuggles close. His fur was soft and safe against her cheek.

Zoe put on her cozy pajamas—the ones with little moons on them. Mr. Snuggles snuggled under the covers first. "Come here," he seemed to say. Zoe climbed in beside him. The blanket was warm and gentle, like a hug from someone who loves you very much.

She looked at Mr. Snuggles in the quiet darkness. "We found it," Zoe whispered. "We found the sleepy time." The teddy bear's soft paw rested on her hand. Outside, the moon rose higher and higher, casting silver light across the room.

Zoe's eyes grew heavier and heavier. Her breathing became slow and easy. Mr. Snuggles stayed right beside her, warm and faithful. The house hummed with peace. All the colors of the day faded to soft gray and silver. Zoe let out a tiny yawn.

"Goodnight, Mr. Snuggles," she murmured, her words trailing like sleepy whispers. The teddy bear's button eyes seemed to close too. Outside, the stars shone brighter still, keeping watch over Zoe's cozy room. Everything was safe. Everything was warm. Everything was right. Zoe drifted into dreams, tucked under her blanket, with Mr. Snuggles holding her hand all through the night.

Why a short bedtime story works at bedtime

A short story you actually finish beats a long one you abandon halfway. Three minutes is enough for a beginning, a middle and a goodnight.

Read-aloud tips

  • Read a little slower than feels natural, and slower again in the last paragraph.
  • Dim the lights before you start, not after: the story is the wind-down.
  • Let your child pick the theme, then you pick the length.
  • Same story three nights in a row is fine. Repetition is comforting at bedtime.
